STA Travel Heralds Boom in ‘Voluntourism’

LONDON, January 26, 2011-

  - Round-the-World Travellers to Build in a Community Project to Plans

YOUTH travel specialist STA Travel http://www.statravel.co.uk is
predicting a surge in ‘voluntourism’ this year as young people look to give
something back to communities around the globe as they plot their
round-the-world travels. STA Travel has just unveiled its 2011
round-the-world ticket prices which start from GBP729 for those under 26 or
students, or GBP1445 for those over 26. It has eight different
round-the-world itineraries on offer for under GBP1000, making it the leader
in this sector. It is offering 10 per cent off its volunteering and
conservation trips which it offers in conjunction with Planeterra until March
17. Managing director John Constable said: “STA Travel has committed US
$1million over five years to Planeterra to develop our new volunteer travel
programmes.

“We are seeing increasing interest in adding in a community project or a
conservation aspect into a round-the-world trip. Young people are feeling
that they should give something back to their host countries rather than
simply hopping through them for a few weeks.”

STA Travel’s most popular projects include two weeks working with
elephants at a rescue centre north of Chiang Mai in Thailand; three-weeks
volunteering with underprivileged children in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro;
and two weeks working alongside an experienced orangutan conservation team in
the heart of Borneo. Sample round-the-world flight prices:
