Parkroyal hotels & resorts sets up relief fund
Providing financial support to staff at Yangon property in the aftermath of May 3 cyclone Nargis
Singapore, 15 May 2008: Parkroyal Hotels & Resorts has established a special relief fund to provide financial support to staff of Parkroyal Yangon affected by the May 3 cyclone Nargis, the worst to hit Asia since 1991.
The Parkroyal Group responded immediately to the crisis by sending an initial US$25,000 to Parkroyal Yangon to help staff cope in the aftermath of the disaster. This fund-raising effort continues with the contributions still pouring in from staff at Parkroyal on Beach Road and Parkroyal on Kitchener Road in Singapore; Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur and Parkroyal Penang in Malaysia; and Parkroyal Saigon in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
In addition, staff at Parkroyal corporate office based in Singapore have also rallied together to give voluntary donations to their colleagues at Parkroyal Yangon.
The relief fund serves to aid Yangon staff in their plight in many ways including:
• Restoration and repair works on their houses and roofs that were totally damaged by the cyclone.
• Helping them cope with rocketing food prices due to the shortage of food.
• Helping them cope with commodity and transportation prices that have increased three to five times.
• Providing loans to permanent staff who are urgently in need of financial assistance since the disaster struck.
“We are relieved that there have been no casualties and it is business as usual at Parkroyal Yangon. However, many of our employees have lost their homes and they are living on low electricity supplies, little drinking water and lack of fresh food”, said Ms Wee Wei Ling, Executive Director of Parkroyal Hotels & Resorts.
She adds, “We are doing as much as we can to help our staff at Parkroyal Yangon to get their lives back to normal.”
The Parkroyal Group’s financial contributions to the relief effort will be disbursed directly to Parkroyal Yangon through the Group’s headquarters in Singapore.
