Hotel ‘Olympians’ Compete During International Housekeepers Week

DULLES, Va., Oct. 3 2008 - The Inaugural Housekeeping Olympic Games became new essence of competition upstaging the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games, if only for a day in the minds of these Olympians. The games hosted by the team from Holiday Inn Washington Dulles Airport Hotel featured housekeepers from 14 Washington, DC—area hotels and showcased unusual events with a “housekeeping theme,” the creation of Hampton Inn Dulles South General Manager, Christopher Crane.

Teams competed in three “sports” which included Toilet Seat Basketball, Bed Making Race and the Housekeeper Obstacle Course. “Everyone was a winner,” Crane understates, as his team took home the “Gold Medal” for winning the all-around competition. Crane added, “The games created a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and energy, I’m proud to have been a part of such a special event.”

Mark Carrier Senior Vice President of the BF Saul Company—Hotel Division adds, “the games were scheduled in conjunction with International Housekeepers Week and were designed to create a competitive spirit and demonstrate appreciation for the team members. Everyone wins gold for their effort and enthusiasm.”

Competing teams represented four major hotel brands and included competitors from the Crowne Plaza Crystal City, Holiday Inn National Airport, Holiday Inn Gaithersburg, TownPlace Suites Gaithersburg, Crowne Plaza Tysons Corner, Courtyard by Marriott Tysons Corner, Hampton Inn Cascades, TownePlace Suites & SpringHill Suites by Marriott Dulles Airport, Best Western Dulles Airport, Holiday Inn Express Herndon/Reston & Hampton Inn & Suites Dulles Airport.

Hotels worldwide gear up annually to participate in International Housekeepers Week. Beginning in 1981, National Housekeepers Week was created to bring recognition to the frontline workers in the cleaning industry. The program was expanded in 1996 to recognize exemplary housekeepers located outside the U. S, and coined “International Housekeepers Week.”
