Gnarly Head respects the power of massive, bold waves, and offers nothing less in its wines - a plunge of explosive flavor, brooding with jam-laden fruit. Gnarly Head Wines are crafted with California’s spirit of fun and adventure in mind, from some of the finest vineyards in Northern California.
“There’s a reason why they call it The Gnarliest Drop,” said Jim Ferguson, Senior Vice President, Gnarly Head Wines. “Dropping into one of these monster waves is like snowboarding down a mountain that’s moving thirty miles an hour with an avalanche right behind you - add in bone-chilling water and jagged rocks and you see why we call it gnarly. The competition is fierce and extremely challenging. We’re stoked to be a part of this event, and salute these hardcore surfers who inspire all of us to live life to the fullest.”
When ideal conditions strike, 24 of the world’s most elite big-wave surfers are summoned to Half Moon Bay, California with only 24 hours notice. Here they face the extreme elements of Northern California waters in search of the perfect ride.
About Gnarly Head
Gnarly Head is crafted by DFV Wines, a family-owned winery with 85 years of experience in California winemaking and winegrowing. Gnarly Head was launched in 2004 and takes its name from the free standing “head trained” vines found in older California vineyards that provide grapes for the flagship Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel. These 35 - 80 year old vines have twisted trunks and branches that spread out in all directions sprouting leaves like unruly umbrellas - truly gnarly heads. The Gnarly Head portfolio includes Old Vine Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Grigio.
