Gnarly Head Becomes the Official Wine Sponsor of Mavericks(TM) and will Award $5,000 for ‘Gnarliest Drop’ at the 2009/2010 Contest
NAPA, Calif., Dec. 2 - Gnarly Head Wines has joined the legendary Mavericks Surf Contest(TM) Presented by Sony Ericsson and Barracuda Networks as an official sponsor for the 2009/2010 season. In addition, Gnarly Head and Mavericks(TM) will offer a $5,000 prize for the “Gnarly Head Gnarliest Drop” award. Judges will be looking for the surfer who exhibits the most impressive “drop” or downward slide on the face of a wave on the Official Contest Day. As usual, after the Opening Ceremony took place on October 30th, everyone is now focused on the ocean. The Official Contest Day could fall anywhere between now and March 31, 2010.
Gnarly Head respects the power of massive, bold waves, and offers nothing less in its wines - a plunge of explosive flavor, brooding with jam-laden fruit. Gnarly Head Wines are crafted with California’s spirit of fun and adventure in mind, from some of the finest vineyards in Northern California.
“There’s a reason why they call it The Gnarliest Drop,” said Jim Ferguson, Senior Vice President, Gnarly Head Wines. “Dropping into one of these monster waves is like snowboarding down a mountain that’s moving thirty miles an hour with an avalanche right behind you - add in bone-chilling water and jagged rocks and you see why we call it gnarly. The competition is fierce and extremely challenging. We’re stoked to be a part of this event, and salute these hardcore surfers who inspire all of us to live life to the fullest.”
When ideal conditions strike, 24 of the world’s most elite big-wave surfers are summoned to Half Moon Bay, California with only 24 hours notice. Here they face the extreme elements of Northern California waters in search of the perfect ride.
About Gnarly Head
Gnarly Head is crafted by DFV Wines, a family-owned winery with 85 years of experience in California winemaking and winegrowing. Gnarly Head was launched in 2004 and takes its name from the free standing “head trained” vines found in older California vineyards that provide grapes for the flagship Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel. These 35 - 80 year old vines have twisted trunks and branches that spread out in all directions sprouting leaves like unruly umbrellas - truly gnarly heads. The Gnarly Head portfolio includes Old Vine Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Grigio.
Coined as “the wave beyond,” the Mavericks(TM) brand inspires hardcore athletes to face the unpredictably raw power of Mother Nature, and stirs the souls of those who aspire to challenge their own limits. Mavericks remains true to its core: a cold, mysterious and foreboding place that demands respect from everyone who goes there and inspires them to attempt the extraordinary.
