Hi,

I am working as an assistant F&B;manager in a hotel for 2 years now and want to progress my career. I have been thinking of doing an MBA program but I am not sure how much this would add to a career path within the hospitality sector. Is it a requirement to progress further and worth the investment?

Thanks,
Paul

I think much is depending on your personality, personal skills, motivation, if you are driven enough, but it is also important if you have natural management qualities. I have seen many examples of people that made a career without education by just working hard and using their natural talents. I can’t deny that a good education forms a good basis and it could open doors, but you still have to proove yourself after. Good luck!

Not too long ago, the hospitality industry was such that a formal education did not matter. People started at the bottom, worked hard, and progressed through the ranks.

My point of view is that things are changing. The more relevant education that you can get, the better. I would suggest though that if you are sure that you will continue in the hospitality field then I would advise that you get a hospitality specific degree. There are many hotel schools that offer MBA’s and Masters specifically for Hospitality.

I’d recommend you to go with MBA process as you can go for further study as well with a reputable job in that field. As in the recession, hospitality is facing crucial time for its growth period. That’s why, its not a better option as compared to MBA.

I agree, better stick with MBA. There are a lot of degree holders in relevance to hospitality courses and some are left jobless.

You must equip yourself with managerial skills and this is a need of time that if you are working in any professional field and even in Hospitality and Hotel Management you must need a M.B.A degree with specialization in Hospitality Management as a subject to cater your needs in the field you want to pursue your career in it. so i do suggest you to keep stick with M.B.A and do relax your mind and just take only one decision which is yours only and do not let your thoughts be wander and just take a firm decision for your future prospects…

Good Luck Buddy smile

Hi paul, it was nice to hear that you are thinking about having a great future. But its all up to you if you are capable of handling it or not. If you can’t then don’t pursue you must follow your heart.

Hi Giuseppe here.I have seen good and bad trained managers, you have to define what type of manager you want to be, e,g, restaurant, fubction, f/b, general,at the end of the day, to climb the ladder to the top, you must know more than the head waiter, restaurant manager and so on, apart from knowing about service, you must know how to purchase food and beverage, have food knowledge, how the kitchen functions, how to discuss menus and percetiges with the executive chef, know all about functions and the services required. weddings, Christians, Jewish, Indian Japonese and all their etiquettes, Ball, lauches, cristening, and so on. having done all this in Hotels and in my own establishment, I am an old timer, my advice is,go to the best Hotel and work your way up, one step at the time and learn as much as you can about food and wines, the steps are
1.be the best waiter, then become the best head waiter, manager function, food and beverage,if your the best in all this. there is no stopping, establishments will come to you. Dont be scared or confused by what I have stated, some of the best I have known and worked for, never had any diplomas, its just hard work, it wont kill you. The next step to Hotel managment is not that difficult. Giuseppe

People now days keep interest in owing and running a self managed hotel, resort or a casino. Managing all about the hotel, resources, hospitality, food, and day-to-day stuff is a big task ahead. Students too wish to graduate with a degree MBA in Hospitality Management and run a self-owned hoteling business in future. It is rightly said that food and hoteling business has no stopping irrespective of the situation in market and surroundings. Hoteling and food industry covers a major section of entire business all around India. Students focus on taking up a course in hospitality managements. Lots of reputed institutes are offering the course. Some of them include:

It would be advisable to pursue a Master’s Degree in Hospitality if your next promotion is a Senior / Top-level management position which requires you to have deeper knowledge on the hospitality industry as a whole and how to run & manage a hospitality business internationally.

Otherwise, a bachelor’s degree would be sufficient.

an MBA is not essential, but you must have some academic title: a degree for example in a discipline linked to either hospitality or business in general.

You might still progress in the same hotel or chain, but if you ever change company they will look at your CV and your studies.
